SRC Description


The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) course is the introductory award for a patrolling surf lifesaver that can be achieved from the age of 13.


This course helps to prepare participants for active patrolling duties that may include: rescue skills, first aid and resuscitation.


Participants not only test their skills in practical learning, but also explore the theoretical side of surf lifesaving, including: safety knowledge and surf awareness.


The 2019 SRC course dates will be

Start Date: Wednesday, 13th September 2019 (Information evening)

Followed by a program including theory & practical sessions:

Prerequisite Dates: 22nd November 2019

Practical Dates: 23rd & 24th November 2019


·      Approximately a 10 week theory course – each unit will have scheduled exams

·      Membership fees will need to be paid before the first training session.

·      Training manual – located at the club ONLY

Note: To sit the practical exam a Nipper must be 13 years of Age – anyone in the age group below that has a birthday early in season can train with this group and wait for a later exam if they haven’t turned of age on date of the first exam.

A candidate must:

·       Be a minimum of 13 years old on the date of assessment.

·       Have completed a 200 metre swim in five (5) minutes or less in a swimming pool of no less than 25m, or over open measured water which will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities.





Candidates are instructed in the lifesaving competencies described in the following relevant sections of the 35th  Edition of the PUBLIC SAFETY AND AQUATIC RESCUE training manual.




Unit 1 – Safety and Wellbeing
Unit 2 – Surf Awareness and Skills
Unit 3 – The Human Body
Unit 4 – Resuscitation
Unit 6 – First Aid
Unit 8 – Communications
Unit 9 – Rescue Techniques
Unit 11 – Patrols



Assessment of the SRC is based on candidate induction and the following assessment tasks:

·       Dry Assessments – Signals, First Aid & CPR

·       Wet Assessments – 100m Run-100m Swim-100m Run, Rescues (tube and board)


You need to be committed to completing the online learning of the 9 units attend the full weekend of practical training and assessment and patrols in order to become competent in all areas of the course.


No participant can participate in the practical weekend until evidence of your completed units has been printed and handed to me on the Friday before the practical weekend and you have completed your pre-requisite swim.



Please be prepared with goggles, towel, sunscreen, wetsuit, warm clothes, drink bottle and a positive attitude.
