Dean Mercer Dash

Dean Mercer OAM is a Thirroul SLSC Life Member who tragically passed away in 2017 (aged 47).

Dean began his career at age 15 under the blue and white cap of Thirroul and went on to become one of the stars of Ironman racing in the 80's, 90's and into the 2000's.

Dean's career highlights include an Order of Australia Medal (OAM), Surf Life Saving NSW Hall of Fame Inductee, 2x Australian Ironman Champion, multiple NSW Ironman championships and World Oceanman Series Champion.

Naming a 5km event a 'Dash' might seem unusual to some, but the event course follows Dean's training route. It is a loop from the surf club to the Sandon Point Boat Sheds and back, and to this day Dean still holds the club record.

Dean Mercer had a fearless approach to training and racing. His determination, humility and work ethic continue to inspire the surf lifesaving community, and we're proud to honour his legacy through this event.
